Mastering the Art of Networking to Boost Your Career

Professional networking can help you level up your career. Once you have a network in place, you can quickly and easily engage with industry professionals any time you choose. Your network can keep you in the loop about new career opportunities that line up with your interests. And, you can help members of your network grow their careers, too.

Of course, to reap the benefits of networking, you first need to develop your professional network. Here are three tips to help you master the art of networking.

1. Make the Most of LinkedIn

If you haven’t done so already, set up a LinkedIn profile. Or, if you already have a LinkedIn account, fine-tune it. That way, you can provide other LinkedIn members in your industry with the information they need to find you.

Take as much time as you need to complete your LinkedIn profile. Share information about your industry skills and experience. You can also join industry groups on LinkedIn.

Engage in discussions and attend networking events on LinkedIn, too. Update your LinkedIn profile regularly, too. As a result, you can use LinkedIn to grow your professional network faster and more efficiently than ever before.

2. Introduce Yourself to Industry Professionals

Look for networking events on LinkedIn and in your community. These events allow you to connect with industry professionals and expand your network.

Ask members of your network to introduce you to industry professionals. For example, you may find a job you want to land on LinkedIn and see that a member of your network is connected to a hiring team member. In this instance, you can ask the member of your network to introduce you to the hiring team member.

Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to industry professionals on your own, either. When you do, send a clear, concise message to explain who you are and why you’d like to add this individual to your professional network.

3. Keep the Lines of Communication Open

Maintain ongoing communication with members of your network. For instance, if you meet someone at a networking event, follow up with this individual after the event.

You should be accessible to members of your network. If someone in your network reaches out to you for help, you can assist this individual.

Encourage people in your network to continue introducing you to industry professionals. If you remain open to expanding your network, members of your network can help you accomplish your desired result. Over time, you can build a large network that helps you advance in your career.
