Implementing a Company Wellness Program to Increase Team Bonding & Morale

In today’s workplace, the health of employees appears to be a rare commodity.  Because of this, many employers have implemented wellness strategies to create happier, healthier employees.  In turn, happy employees boost workplace morale and create a better company culture.  Employees who feel happy and supported at work are much more productive and care about meeting goals, than those who are stressed out to the point that they’re constantly getting sick. Here are just a few of the ways implementing a wellness program can help increase workplace morale at your office.

When you encourage employees to be healthier they feel better at work.

Make your wellness program effective by encouraging employees to take advantage of incentives to get fit.  Find out which exercise activities your employees are most passionate about and figure out how to incorporate those personal interests into the office. Provide a lunch hour walking club or afternoon yoga class.  Offer discounts or partially subsidize memberships to a local gym or exercise club.  Incentivize participation by having a weight loss challenge between departments.  The more employees take advantage of exercise opportunities, the better they will feel.  Exercising increases endorphins, which relieve stress.

Offering nutritious food options encourages employees to eat healthy.

When employees are hard at work, it’s often convenient (and sometimes necessary) to quickly grab whatever food is the most available.  In many office spaces, that’s a soda and chips from the vending machine.  Encourage healthy eating by offering better snack and meal options that will help fuel employee performance, while meeting nutritional needs.  Replace chips with nuts and dried fruit, and replace sodas with water and juice. If your office has a cafeteria, be sure it offers plenty of healthy options. When employees get the nutrition they need, they produce a more positive energy.

Wellness programs foster employee loyalty.

A study by Principal Financial Group, found that 41 percent of employees felt that wellness benefits made them harder-working, better-engaged employees.  40 percent of employees surveyed claimed that a wellness program would make them stay with an employer longer.  Reducing turnover alone builds a stronger team environment.

Wellness programs attract top talent.

Offering wellness benefits demonstrates to job seekers how committed you are to the health and happiness of your employees.  When you get a reputation for having a “culture of wellness,” you’ll be more likely to attract top talent to fill your openings.

Taking a few extra steps toward creating a healthier work environment can go a long way in boosting morale and building a stronger team.  As we’ve mentioned before, company health often begins with hiring the right employees.
