3 Tips on Reducing Turnover in Young Employees

One of the challenges of being a manager is learning how to reduce employee turnover.  This can be especially challenging when working with younger employees.  The millennial generation is much different than generations of the past.  They want to work in collaborative environments, and they’re not afraid to jump ship when they don’t see room for advancement.  By 2025, the millennial generation will make up 75 percent of the workforce.  Therefore, it’s essential that you know how to adapt to their workplace needs if you don’t want the risk of high turnover.  Here are a few tips to keep these younger workers invested in your organization.

Offer flexibility.
Work-life balance is a very significant driver of employee retention amongst Gen Y workers.  Because this tech-savvy generation grew up on the Internet, they are able to work anytime from anywhere.  Because of this, young workers don’t see themselves tied to an office.  They want to work where they want, when they want, sitting by whomever they choose.  A recent study discovered that many millennials are even willing to sacrifice pay for the ability to work outside the physical office.  Offering flexible scheduling and an office space without cubicles can meet their need for flexibility.

Give encouragement and feedback.
Young employees are socially connected and able to regularly compare themselves against their peers.  Therefore, they want constant encouragement and feedback.  A simple “thank you” or “great work” from a supervisor can make a world of difference in their perception of the workplace.  Keep an open line of communication and give feedback on how they’re doing and how they can improve.  Gen Y workers place a higher value on recognition than monetary incentives.  Using the company social media accounts to recognize hard work is often much more effective than giving them tangible rewards.

Tell the truth.
Most important of all, when it comes to dealing with younger employees make sure you always deliver on promises.  If you can’t deliver, you better have a good reason for it. Gen Y employees value integrity.  They want leaders that are genuine and reliable.  They are insanely aware, so be sure what you’re doing matches up with what you tell them you’re doing.  Millennials will spot a gap in the truth and aren’t quick to forget.  When asked why they decided to leave their last job, many millennials will place the blame on lack of transparency from management.

Millennials are arguably the most educated generation yet and are easy to turn into long-term employees by offering them an environment that works with their innovative perspective.  They are the future of your organization and you should take advantage of their passion and ideas.
