With both Halloween and daylight savings time now behind us, the holiday season in just around the corner. As we enter this time of gratitude it’s important to think of all the things you’re thankful for. This applies not just to your personal life, but to your professional life as well. Take this time to remind employees how thankful you are for their hard work by using implementing these simple ideas.
Be Accommodating
Show employees you value them by treating them as adults and letting them use their own discretion when allocating their time. If they need to occasionally work from home, let them. If they need to leave early for a doctor’s appointment or their child’s school play, don’t make a big deal out of it. As long as they can get their work done, you should be accommodating when employees need to shift hours around. This shows employees that you respect their personal time and don’t want to cause additional stress for them.
Acknowledge a Job Well Done
As a manager, it’s important to give praise and recognition when it’s deserved. Whether in an email or a staff meeting, publicly acknowledging hard work shows employees that you are thankful for the hard work they’re doing. Recognition communicates respect, and respect is a powerful motivator. Employees are much more likely to perform to their full potential when they know they’re valued.
Get to Know Them
Your employees are likely from many different backgrounds and career paths. Show that you are thankful for them by really getting to know them. What keeps them coming to work everyday? What do they like to do for fun? What sports do their kids play? What do they want out of their current position? When you find out what’s important your staff, you show them that you really care about them and that they’re a valuable part of the company.
Organize a Thanksgiving Lunch
Plan a staff lunch with catering from a local restaurant. While it may not seem like much, for employees who have been working hard all year, it will certainly put a smile on their face. You can also organize a potluck or a baking competition. No matter what you do, providing food and encouraging employees to eat together will give your team a chance to relax and step away from their desk. Take this opportunity to tell employees specifically why you’re thankful for them.
