Preparing for the Video Interview: 5 Tips for Jobseekers

These days, video interviews are a normal and common practice for actively hiring companies. They are a convenient method of interviewing for everyone. Companies can do more interviews in a day. Applicants can interview without having to dedicate a significant amount of time. However, unique challenges come with participating in a video interview. These five tips will help you succeed with your next video interview.

1. Dress Professionally

Your interview may be attending a virtual interview, but you still need to dress to impress. How you present yourself will signal to the interviewer how seriously you take the opportunity. Where the same outfit that you would wear to an in-person interview to your video interview. Depending on the position and industry, this could be a polo shirt, button-down shirt, or full suit and tie.

2. Test Your Technology

Always test your technology equipment before your interview time. You don’t want to miss your interview because you can’t get your website or microphone to work. Similarly, you don’t want to be present but can’t participate because your technology isn’t working. Testing your equipment the day before will give you time to fix it or come up with an alternative plan if you find that it isn’t working.

3. Choose the Right Location

Choose a quiet room that has no background noise. This will ensure the interviewer will be able to hear your answers. Additionally, you don’t want distractions of other people walking around behind you. Finally, turn on your camera and look at what will be your background. Consider how neat and clean it is. Additionally, you don’t want anything that is inappropriate or embarrassing to appear on camera.

4. Consider Your Body Language

On a video call, it can be hard to have open body language. However, you need to consider how you position your body and the camera during the video interview. Start by sitting upright and centered in your chair in front of the camera. Then, position the camera so that it shows your upper body. You want to be centered in the camera. It shouldn’t be so high that you look like a floating head. It shouldn’t be so low as to show your lower body.

5. Maintain Eye Contact

Often, people want to look at themselves or the video display of the other person. While it’s ok to look at the video of the person talking, you don’t want to stare down at your screen the entire time. To the other people, you will be looking down the whole time. This is because the camera on laptops is placed above the screen. Instead of looking at the screen, simulate direct eye contact when speaking by looking into the camera when talking. That way, it will look like you are speaking directly to the other person when speaking.

Ace Your Video Interview

With these five tips, you are on your way to a successful video interview. Start by planning a professional outfit and ensuring your technology equipment is ready. Choose a quiet location that will allow you to focus on the interview. During your interview, maintain good body posture and eye contact.
