5 Tips for Enhancing the Remote Onboarding Experience

A third of workers in the United States work remotely full-time. While hiring remotely can help your company access more talent, it also presents a challenge. You need to develop an onboarding process that effectively trains new hires and makes them feel a part of your team. These tips will help you enhance your onboarding experience by optimizing your process. 

1. Set Expectations

Set the stage for the onboarding process by telling everyone what to expect. Setting expectations helps to reduce anxiety and confusion. For some, working remotely could be a new experience. The unknown can create additional stress on top of the stress of starting a new job. Get everyone on the same page about the onboarding process and what is expected. Outline who they will need to know and what tools are required to do the job effectively. Provide a schedule of the onboarding process that trainees can follow. 

2. Prioritize Operational Technology

Malfunctioning or inoperable technology will delay onboarding or bring it to a complete halt. Set your new trainees up for success by preparing the technology in advance. That way, training isn’t delayed by technology struggles. Send out a requirements list in advance. Give trainees a portal they can log into and verify their system works.

Assign a current employee to each new person going through the onboarding process. Try to choose people who have experience working for the company and are personable. That way, they can serve as a personal resource for the remote worker. This facilitates a smoother transition and virtual integration. 

4. Build Relationships and Culture

Begin the onboarding process by setting the right atmosphere and building culture. Give a warm welcome where you encourage engagement with icebreakers and games. Schedule meet and greets where you introduce your onboarding class to current employees. This helps remote workers put a face to the names they will interact with. You build familiarity that creates a more collaborative workspace. 

If the onboarding class is large, schedule regular one-on-ones. That way, you can touch base with each individual. The dedicated attention will make them feel valued. It will also help you identify weaknesses that need further attention. 

Schedule a check-in after the first week or two for all new hires. You can answer outstanding questions or address concerns early on. 

5. Celebrate Success

Feeling valued or connected to the company can be difficult for a remote worker. Celebrating success during the onboarding process helps people feel recognized and appreciated. Recognize individuals who excel. Administer progress quizzes. Then, recognize performers with top scores. People respond to positive reinforcement, so celebrating achievements can improve performance.
