Especially after the trials of the Coronavirus pandemic, our nurses deserve a HUGE thank you. BOS Staffing, along with our sister company BOS Medical, would like to celebrate National Nurses Week. Let’s take the time to honor those who serve as the heart of healthcare.
What Is Nurses Week?
National Nurses Week runs from May 6th to May 12th each year. (May 12th is nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale’s birthday.) In both the 1950s and the 1970s, efforts were made to officially recognize nurses. However, these movements met with limited success. Finally, in 1982, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation declaring May 6th as National Recognition Day for Nurses. The American Nurses Association (ANA) expanded this into a week-long celebration during the 1990s. And thankfully, we’ve continued to honor nurses ever since.
How Can You Celebrate Nurses Week?
Whether you know a nurse, receive care from a nurse, employ a nurse, or are a nurse, you can acknowledge their heroic efforts. Here are a few ways to say, “Thank you!”
- Write a Note
Most of us know a special nurse. This may be a family member, a friend, a caregiver, a mentor, or even a nurse at your doctor’s office. Take a moment this spring to express your appreciation. Write a quick letter or send a text message. Explain why you admire them and why their services are irreplaceable. - Highlight a Nurse on Social Media
You can use a social media post to not only say thank you but also raise awareness for everything nurses do. Snap a picture of your favorite healthcare worker in action and explain what makes them so special. This impactful strategy can be used by everyone from individual patients to hospitals that employ hundreds of nurses. - Send Presents
Although heartfelt notes are nice, nurses appreciate small tokens of appreciation too. You could give your favorite nurse a gift card, a fruit basket, or a bouquet of flowers. Medical facilities or hospitals also could pass out presents and/or host a nurse’s appreciation lunch or coffee hour.
