Help your employees see that their job is not just a job. What they do is essential, and it impacts others in a positive manner.

Compensate Fairly

Most people can’t afford to work for free. And when they realize someone in a similar role is making twice as much money as they are, they’re bound to feel resentful. Of course, not every organization can pay top dollar. Therefore, bestselling author Daniel Pink advocates “pay people fairly, pay people well; indeed, pay people enough to take the issue of money off the table.” Also, keep in mind, money isn’t the only way to compensate your employees. Many workers are willing to accept a smaller paycheck in exchange for competitive benefits and perks. These may include a great company culture, remote work options, a comprehensive health insurance package, and more.

Hire the Right People

Someone may love their job and their paycheck, but if they’re stuck with miserable coworkers, ultimately, they’ll be miserable. As a result, to keep your team happy, focus on bringing the right people into your organization. Patty McCord, the former chief talent officer at Netflix, outlines the importance of hiring in her book Powerful. She observes, “… the best thing you can do for employees is hire only high performers to work alongside them. It’s a perk far better than Foosball or free sushi or even a big signing bonus or the holy grail of stock options.”

Offer Opportunities for Growth

Giving your employees the chance to advance their skills serves as an incredibly strong motivator too. In fact, according to a 2019 report, 86% of respondents said they would change jobs if it meant more opportunities for professional development. Despite these statistics, some bosses worry investing money in employee training will backfire. After all, those employees may simply use their new skills to land jobs at other companies. Certainly, this could and does happen. Nevertheless, business magnate Sir Richard Branson provides this sage advice, “Train people well enough so they can leave. Treat them well enough so they don’t want to.”
