#StaySafeStayHome. Finding Silver Linings in Social Distancing

In a few short weeks, the Coronavirus pandemic has completely upended our lives. You’ve committed to #staysafestayhome, but this isolation is tougher than you thought. Follow these three tips for finding silver linings in social distancing.

  1. Rediscover Your Home

As long as you’re stuck inside, take a moment to look around your house. Is there something you’ve been meaning or wanting to do? Guess what? This is your chance. Tackle an unfinished project, dust off those board games, read a book, binge watch a show or cook a meal from scratch and enjoy a candlelight dinner with your family. (If you live by yourself, switch this to a video call dinner with friends.) And, when you run out of ideas, check out this list of free online activities that weren’t free before Coronavirus including concerts and fitness classes.

  2. Embrace Productivity

Although the circumstances are unfortunate, you’ve been given the gift of time. Use it wisely. Since you’ll have fewer distractions, this is a fantastic opportunity to get things done. Even though you’re at home, put yourself on a schedule. (Of course, you CAN wake up later now that you don’t have a commute.) Plan your day, make a to-do list, give yourself deadlines or, if necessary, give yourself consequences. For example, “No TV until I’ve finished these three tasks.” With a little bit of discipline, you won’t believe what you’ll be able to accomplish by the time this crisis is over.

  3. Begin a New Adventure

If you’re one of the millions of Americans who has lost their job because of the COVID-19 outbreak, you may feel as though there is no silver lining. However, instead of panicking, think about how to use this downtime to your advantage. After all, you’re locked in your house anyway. Consider increasing your skillset by taking an online class. Many websites like Coursera, edX, and Udemy offer low-cost or free options. Or, check the job boards. Some companies are hiring for remote positions. You may not find something full time, but you could try something new AND bring in additional income. Look for career-building experiences that spark your interest, broaden your horizons and, ultimately, make you more marketable.
