Job Interview Tips for Applicants: Asking Good Questions

In most interviews, applicants will be given the opportunity to ask questions of the employer. Many people, especially if they have done their research on the company, feel they know all they need to know. However, asking good questions can make the difference between impressing an interviewer and being passed over for someone else. Furthermore, you may uncover information that you did not realize you were missing.

Ask about workplace culture and values. Some of this will be evident from your observations of the workspace and the way employees interact with each other. However, some things, like how much employees socialize outside of work, might be less obvious. If the company has stated values, you can ask how those values play a role in day to day operations.

Ask about the future vision for the company. This will show your interest in staying with the company long term, and will give you a good idea of whether there will be opportunities for you to grow professionally there.

Ask about the interviewer’s experiences with the company. Learning how the interviewer came to the company or what they value most about working there can give you a more personal perspective on what it’s like to work there.

Ask about challenges you might face in the job. This will show that you want to understand every aspect of the job you’re applying for, and that you’re up for the challenge. You might also identify an issue that could keep you from making a bad decision.

Remember that you are, in a sense, also interviewing the company to make sure it is a good fit for you. Asking good questions is a way to ensure that you have all the information you need to make a decision, as well as a way to show your potential employer how interested you are in the position.
